To support the church is one of the 5 precepts of the Catholic Church. The faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his abilities. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2043)
"The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life. the obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the indispensable minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2041)
"The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what is necessary for divine worship, for the works of the apostolate and of charity, and for the decent support of ministers." (Code of Canon Law 222 §1.)
Donations, or "almsgiving," are considered an act of mercy and a form of worship. It is not just about giving money, but showing love, with the belief that all possessions are gifts from God entrusted to us to build a more just world.
These are donations made to honor the memory of a deceased loved one, often in lieu of funeral wreaths. Legacy giving (bequests) allows individuals to support the Church's mission in their will.
Parishes often have a "second collection" during Mass on specific weekends, which are set aside for designated causes, such as charities (SVDP Society) or special building funds.
